Odessa Taylor

Hey there! I'm a freelance editor specializing in copyediting and content editing for various written works.

What I Do

I am primarily a copyeditor, which means that I focus on the spelling, grammar, and syntax (sentence structure) of writing. I am also experienced in content editing, which is more about analyzing the writing itself for flow, readability, cohesion, etc. I can offer assistance in helping a client find other professionals for the publishing process (publishers, illustrators, graphic designers, etc.) when I cannot fulfill those needs myself.

While I mostly work on books, I am willing to work on any kind of written piece: articles, essays, short stories, etc. I am also happy to work with most genres, both fiction and nonfiction. I would not recommend seeking my services for screenplays, scripts, or poetry except for basic copyediting, as I am not particularly skilled in working with these types of writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work remotely?

Absolutely! In fact, most of my clients so far have been people I've never met face-to-face.

What do you charge?

For books, I charge either $0.008 per word or $0.50 per page, depending on the client's preference.

For articles and essays, I charge a flat fee of $30.

For projects in which I am expected to do more than simply copyedit and content edit (i.e. if you are more in need of a ghostwriter or co-writer), I charge $15 per hour.

I am relatively flexible with these prices and will gladly work with a client to determine any adjustments to the price range before beginning work.

What is your goal as an editor?

I believe that everyone has the ability to write a story, and it is my greatest honor to help writers see their stories come to life. My goal in editing is nothing more than to make your writing the best it can be.

I make a special effort to keep the author's voice true to their original writing. You won't have to worry about me attempting to rewrite your book for you. I give you all of my suggestions for grammar, spelling, syntax, and content based on my schooling and experience, but you are the one ultimately in control of your book.

What formats do you work with?

Google Docs is ideal for the technology I use, but I am perfectly capable of working with Microsoft Word, as well as physical copies.

Testimonials

"I've been writing since I was a little girl and receiving feedback on my work since I was a teenager, but Odessa was the first one to give me feedback that really matters.

I had received plenty of feedback on my writing from other professionals before, but she was the first person I found who focused on the story as a whole and where it was going. She is extremely well-read, and I consider her to be very familiar with the current book market. I will most definitely be working with her in the future."

- Alexis Flitton, current client

"I hired Odessa to be my editor for my first book, Heart of the Beholder. She was so kind and so professional! She was very thorough with my manuscript and caught a lot of my mistakes. She even did extra research to double check rules neither of us were completely familiar with, which was awesome! I recommend her and will totally hire her again for future projects! She is a true delight!"

Elizabeth Ruth, past client

"Odessa Taylor came highly recommended from a trusted friend as one who was trained in writing and publication, and she has been an absolute joy to work with. She is intelligent, innovative, capable, dependable, and very patient. I could not have written my book without her dedicated contribution and support. I highly recommend her to anyone thinking of writing or publishing."
