About Me
Hi! My name is Odessa Taylor, and I am a freelance editor. I have always loved to read and to write, so it was pretty easy to choose what to study in college. In April 2022, I graduated from Brigham Young University–Idaho with a bachelor's degree in English and an emphasis in Editing. After a brief stint as an editor for an online magazine, I have been consistently doing freelance editing work since June 2023.
Some fun (and some boring) facts about me:
- My favorite book is Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. I love reading fantasy, so Sanderson is a natural favorite for me.
- I listen almost exclusively to movie scores, with some of my favorites being The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and anything composed by Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Finding Nemo, etc.).
- Contrary to popular belief, I was named after the city in Ukraine, not the one in Texas. I have yet to visit either one.
- I accidentally swallowed my own tooth once because I thought it was a popcorn kernel.
- Besides reading, I also enjoy watching movies, learning languages, spending time with my family, and writing.
What is the weirdest food you've ever tried? I ate a sliver of a century egg once. In case you don't know what that is, it's a Chinese dish made by preserving an egg for a long period of time (several weeks to several months) in a particular mix. I can't even really describe the taste—maybe imagine that you dipped a hard-boiled egg in shoe polish.
What is the most outrageous thing you've done for a bet? It isn't that outrageous in the grand scheme of things, but back in my senior year of high school, my friend challenged me to see who could eat the most Altoids in one sitting. We were neck-and-neck with about 35 each when he took the tin and dumped the rest into his mouth, winning the challenge. I don't even remember what prize we'd determined, but he got it. I had a cold at the time, but it completely cleared my sinuses for the next hour and a half.
What is the most unusual thing that has happened to you while traveling? I flew out of state for a friend's wedding, and for both the flight there and the flight back, the X-ray at the TSA station alerted them that I had something suspicious up my butt. I definitely did not, but I had to get frisked anyway both times! (According to the second TSA agent, wearing a long T-shirt can make the X-rays misread somehow.)
“I know you don't believe it, but I promise you, life will carry you through. You'll even get to like each other afterwards.”
Crime and Punishment, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, translated by David McDuff
